OPP warning people about tax scams as part of Fraud Prevention Month

It’s both tax season and Fraud Prevention Month.

With that in mind local OPP detachments are warning people to be on the lookout. This time of the year is a prime season for scammers.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says tax scams usually come in one of two forms. The first involves fraudsters calling people pretending to be from the CRA, the second is an email that says you’re getting a refund and all you have to do is click the included link.

Keep in mind the CRA will never threaten you with things like jail time over the phone nor demand immediate payment and the agency will use registered mail to get in touch. If you have any questions about your taxes you should always call the CRA yourself to double check.

If you think you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, you can call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or report online at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website.
