Stratford’s Sesquicentennial celebrations to recognize Aboriginal history

Stratford’s celebration of Canada’s 150th will recognize Aboriginal people. City council agreed at Monday night’s meeting to instruct the Sesquicentennial Committee to acknowledge there were nations here before Europeans arrived.

This came from a request by Councillor Kathy Vassilakos who brought the issue up. She wanted to see Stratford’s celebrations adopt the “150+” moniker as other places have done.

Although printing of Stratford’s celebratory materials for Canada Day has already begun, and therefore not all of it could include the plus sign, Vassilakos said she just wants to see the city do something that recognizes Aboriginal history in Canada.
