Huron and Perth counties launch new mental health crisis support pathways

Mental health and social service organizations across Huron and Perth have come together to develop service pathways. The move is meant to support children, youth and adults during mental health crises.

The two-year project has resulted in an easy-to-follow poster, instructional video and webinar. These resources are designed to guide frontline workers through a consistent workflow.

Heather Hirdes is the mental health lead at the Avon Maitland District School Board and said the resources will be utilized at many organizations.

“At this point, it’s for frontline community workers, so community agencies, family health teams and service providers to help guide their practice with clients, students, adults and youth.”

She added the pathway is to get those in need the help they require.

“It’s meant to help frontline workers who are working with a client who may be in crisis to guide the steps they could take should that student require support. That may be calling our crisis response team, or calling a friend or family member to wrap around to offer support.”

The development of the protocol was completed with the help of seven organizations, including school boards, hospitals and the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Hirdes said about 12 people die by suicide each day in Canada.

“There is a significant gender disparity, with men being affected at rates nearly three times higher than women. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults aged 15 to 34.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, support is available 24/7 through the Huron Perth Helpline and Crisis Response Team at 1-888-829-7484.
