Woman loses $2,500 to Mystery Shopper scam

The Huron County OPP is warning people about the Mystery Shopper scam. This comes after the OPP says a 46-year-old woman recently lost $2,500 after falling victim to it.

The Mystery Shopper scam is the one where a phony employer hires you to evaluate local stores or banks. They give you a cheque, tell you to cash it, then keep some of the cash for yourself for your work and wire the rest back. The problem is the cheque is fake and all you’ve done is send your own money to the scammer.

The OPP says if something sounds too good to be true it probably is. You can find tips on how to protect yourself at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website.
