UPDATED: Wettlaufer Sentenced to Life in Prison

UPDATE 1:

Ontario officials are taking steps to protect vulnerable elderly patients in long-term care homes.  The government announced it is launching an inquiry after Elizabeth Wettlaufer was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing eight patients in long-term care homes.  Attorney General Yasir Naqvi says the hope is to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.  Provincial officials will now be looking for a commissioner to lead the inquiry.  Fifty-year-old Wettlaufer pleaded guilty to using a lethal injection of insulin to kill the patients between 2007 and 2014 at three Ontario long-term care homes and one private facility.  The judge has barred her from any chance of parole over the duration of her prison term.

A former nurse from Woodstock who murdered eight elderly patients has been sentenced to life in prison.  Elizabeth Wettlaufer was given the sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years during her final court hearing today.  On June 1st, the 50-year-old pleaded guilty to first-degree murder after giving a fatal injection of insulin to each of the patients.  Wettlaufer claimed she was getting messages from God to kill the patients.  The killings happened between 2007 and 2014 at three provincial long-term care homes and a private facility.
