No detour during highway 7/8 reconstruction work

There wont be a detour in place during the Highway 7/8 reconstruction project scheduled for next year.

Perth County Council was given an update on the plans for the project at their meeting yesterday morning (Thursday) by the Ministry of Transportation and were told that work had been put into trying to figure out if a detour would be a good option on the project which would stretch from Perth Road 10 east of Stratford to Byron Street in Shakespeare from April 2019 to November 2019, with the final steps done in 2020, but for a number of reasons the MTO decided against it including that it would add time on the trip for those driving through it.

Instead, they have decided that reducing the highway to a single alternating lane for vehicles travelling through in 400 to 500 metre stretches where the work is being done would be the way to go and would only add around two minute delays for those passing through.

Project Engineer with the MTO Andrew Doman says they tried to keep those who will be most impacted by the project in mind.

“Maintaining access for local businesses in Shakespeare, the residents of Shakespeare and also from a safety perspective in maintaining accessibility from emergency services.”

There will be a community information session on the project on April 26th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Shakespeare and District Optimist Hall.
