Wireless Public Alerting system test set for Monday afternoon

Don’t be alarmed when your phone starts going off all of a sudden.

To mark the beginning of Emergency Preparedness Week, Government Agencies across Canada will be sending out the inaugural public awareness tests of Alert Ready’s new wireless public alerting system.

The tests in our area are set for 1:55 p.m. Monday and compatible wireless devices will receive test messages which will be clearly marked as tests, they will also be accompanied by an alert tone which will last for eight seconds on compatible devices.

Perth County Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Colvin says the tests are an important part of being ready for an emergency.

“The wireless alerts come out similar to a text message with an alerting noise that you’ve been hearing on broadcast media for the last couple of years so its distinctive, if your phone’s turned on you’ll be alerted.”

Colvin adds to bring awareness to Emergency Preparedness Week there will be events going including an information booth set up at the Festival Marketplace in Stratford from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.
