Stratford Police taking zero-tolerance approach to marijuana and its members

With pot now legal on Wednesday in Canada, Stratford Police say they are taking a zero-tolerance approach to its members being high while on duty.

Officials with the department say they are dealing with pot the same way that they treat alcohol, they don’t expect officers to come to work high or drunk and they also don’t want officers coming to work after smoking marijuana.

Acting Inspector Mark Taylor says it will be up to staff sergeants to look at their officers when they report for duty and if there are any problems that they handle them on an individual basis.

As far as smoking marijuana the day before a shift, Taylor says it will be up to officers to make sure they are ready to report for duty the next day.

“We don’t expect officers to come to work high or intoxicated so it will be a judgment on them as far as how they feel and how far in advance they stop consuming.”

Taylor adds that they will patrol marijuana-related incidents the same way they do alcohol offenses and not treat them any differently.
