Accused in Stratford Cenotaph case could face jail time

The 20-year-old man accused of driving a vehicle into a cement wall near the Stratford Cenotaph could find himself behind bars.

The Stratford Beacon Herald reports that Nathaneal Tewelde pleaded guilty Monday to impaired driving but sentencing has been put off while the Crown looks into a possible jail sentence for the Kitchener man.

Tewelde also pleaded guilty to mischief under $5 thousand for smashing a telephone at Stratford Police headquarters after he was arrested in August while three other charges were withdrawn.

According to the newspaper, Crown attorney Elizabeth Wilson requested a victim impact statement from the passenger in Tewelde’s vehicle be completed before a position is made on sentencing.

An agreed statement of facts says Tewelde was driving a 2007 Jeep Compass north on Erie Street around 11:40 p.m. August 12th when the vehicle left the road, jumped a curb, crossed a sidewalk past the Stratford Cenotaph and hit a retaining wall before coming to a stop on the north side of the wall.

A city official says repairs to the wall cost around $15 thousand.

Sentencing has been adjourned until November 15th.
