Distracted driving case in Stratford expected to resume next month

The trial of a driver accused of hitting a female pedestrian in Stratford who later died will resume in December.

According to the Stratford Beacon Herald, Ian MacArthur, who is charged with careless driving and careless driving causing bodily harm or death, wasn’t in court Tuesday but a lawyer asked for a one-month adjournment on his behalf to review disclosure.

None of the charges have been proven in court.

Stratford Police say two pedestrians were hit by a vehicle around 8:15 p.m. September 16th, as a Nissan Pathfinder, was turning left onto Huron Street from John Street

The paper reports that one of the pedestrians, 57-year-old Lorraine Ridgen from Stratford, was brought to a local hospital but was later transferred to a hospital in London where she died on October Third.

A second pedestrian, the woman’s husband, was brought to the hospital as a precaution but was later released, according to the paper.

The case comes after Ontario introduced penalties for those convicted of careless driving and endangering pedestrians including fines ranging from $2-thousand to $50-thousand dollars, six demerit points, a driver’s license suspension of up to five years, and up to two years in jail.

The case will pick back up on December 11th.
