Accused in Stratford Cenotaph case set to be sentenced

We are set to learn the sentence for the 20-year-old man accused of driving a vehicle into a cement wall near the Stratford Cenotaph.

Back in late October, Nathaneal Tewelde pleaded guilty to impaired driving but his sentencing was put off until Thursday while the Crown looked into a possible jail sentence for the Kitchener man.

Tewelde also pleaded guilty to mischief under $5 thousand for smashing a telephone at Stratford Police headquarters after he was arrested in August while three other charges were withdrawn.

Late last month, Crown attorney Elizabeth Wilson requested a victim impact statement from the passenger in Tewelde’s vehicle be completed before a position is made on sentencing.

An agreed statement of facts says Tewelde was driving a 2007 Jeep Compass north on Erie Street around 11:40 p.m. August 12th when the vehicle left the road, jumped a curb, crossed a sidewalk past the Stratford Cenotaph and hit a retaining wall before coming to a stop on the north side of the wall.

A city official says repairs to the wall cost around $15 thousand.

The sentencing is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m.

My Stratford Now will have a reporter at the sentencing.
