Meetings held to try and address lack of workers in Perth-Wellington

Adding to the workforce in our area and tackling issues linked to immigration.

Those were the main ideas around two roundtable meetings held last week, one in Mitchell and the other in Palmerston, by Perth-Wellington MP John Nater that were focused on immigration and how to address a lack of workers in the area.

Nater says that, over the last three years, lots of concerns have been brought to him by businesses and employers saying that they can’t find employees and they are turning to programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to address those needs.

He says one of the big concerns raised during the meetings was that the programs are difficult to access.

“We have examples where they have to do the same application multiple times for the same job and sometimes, for a position that doesn’t even exist, they are having to do an application and paperwork just to get that done.”

The input gathered from meetings like these happening across the country will go towards drafting immigration policy recommendations for the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
