Small, Janice May

Small, Janice May – Passed away peacefully at McCarthy Place on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. Beloved sister of Beth Barton (Earl). Proud aunt of Paul (Deborah), Lisa (Brock), Tim (Jane) and Terry (Janelle). Devoted great aunt to Andrew (Ella), Jessica (Dustan), Lily, Mark, Elliot, Quinn, Niamh, Charles and Fiona. Janice was born May 2, 1935, to Charles and Alma Small (nee Krug). Janice loved her family, her church and her community, and has been blessed with a large circle of friends from all stages of her life. High school basketball and volleyball, the girls of Bunny’s Rotanettes and the Kroehler girl’s fastball teams were especially dear to her. Janice also excelled in badminton, bowling, squash, skiing, tennis, and was a three-time ladies golf champion at the Stratford Country Club. Along with sports, Janice was a lifetime member of the Knox Church choir for over 60 years and was the first female member of the Stratford Concert Band, playing French horn for over 50 years. Janice was also a member of the Cathedral Singers of Ontario, traveling and singing extensively around the world to many famous churches. A passionate supporter of the Kiwanis Music Festival, Janice was dedicated to music, including a favourite pastime, Bandshell concerts in Upper Queens Park. Janice was employed by Kroehler Furniture for over 30 years, specializing in computer mainframes; Drake and Drake Dental; and the Stratford Festival as an usher. She was inspired by technology and continued her love of photography taking pictures on her tablet. She was also an avid puzzler, including jigsaws, word searches and crosswords. Janice gave generously of her time with a huge heart and dedicated countless volunteer hours to the Canadian Cancer Society, in particular the April campaign. She was presented with the Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award in April 2017. Our family would like to sincerely thank the excellent staff of McCarthy Place for the exceptional care and love extended to Janice.  Family and friends can gather from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 25, 2018, at Knox Presbyterian Church, 142 Ontario Street, Stratford, for visitation. A service celebrating Janice’s life will follow from 2:00 to 3:00pm at Knox, with a reception in the banquet hall. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Knox Presbyterian Church in memory of “Aunt Jan” through the funeral home.  519.271.7411  www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com.
