Fire officials alerting farming community about preventing barn fires

A string of devastating, high-dollar-loss barn fires that have made headlines the past month has lead to fire officials sounding the alarm.

In the span of a few days, a reported 1200 pigs were killed in a $1-million loss barn fire in Quinte West, a farmer lost calves in a Wilmot Township barn fire and on Thursday a barn fire in Norfolk County resulted in an estimated $6-million in damages.

Perth East and West Perth Fire Chief Bill Hunter says “there are simple, inexpensive steps you can take like general housekeeping and checking your wires and appliances on a regular basis”.

He adds that you can contact your local fire department arrange a visit where staff will come with a “thermal imaging camera” and tour the buildings with you to check for hot spots and offer fire safety tips.
