Perth-Wellington MP critical of some parts of Canada Summer Jobs Program

A good program that has room for improvement.

That’s what the MP for Perth-Wellington is calling the Canada Summer Jobs 2019 Program which started accepting applications from employers on Monday.

John Nater says young Canadians between 15 and 30-years-old have the opportunity to gain the skills and experience they need to get jobs now, and in the future, through the program which distributes funding to create jobs to help students, employers, and local economies with 140 young people employed through the program across Perth-Wellington last summer.

However, Nater says he’s disappointed that the April date for employer notifications hasn’t been moved up to allow for earlier hiring.

“For a business looking to hire a student, it’s far too late to plan for summer employment and for a student, especially a university or a college student, they’re already looking at summer employment way back in January and February to plan for the summer.”

Nater adds that he has lobbied both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour three separate times in the past to move up the date to allow for earlier hiring and he will continue to do so until action is taken.
