Fraudsters target church congregation again

Another fraud is being reported in Stratford, involving members of a church congregation for a second time.

Yesterday police were called by a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church who said she had lost several hundred dollars to a fraudster impersonating her pastor.

She told police she had received an email she believed to be from the Pastor Richard Bestor asking for a donation of iTunes gift cards for patients at the hospital.

The woman bought the cards and followed the instructions in the email but realized she had been a victim of fraud when she received a second email asking for more iTunes cards.

Police have determined several other members of the congregation had received similar emails.

This is similar to another fraud in January involving St. Joseph’s Church when emails of the congregation were hacked.

Stratford Police remind the public to be very cautious about these types of emails when you are being asked to send any type of gift cards or money.

They urge you to have a face-to-face meeting with the person asking for the donation to make sure it is legitimate.

The Stratford Police would like to encourage anyone who has been a victim of fraud to contact them at 519-271-4141 to file a report.

Information regarding any type of fraud should also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Reports can be made online here or by telephone at 1- 888-495-8501.
