Ontario Premier takes aim at carbon tax during visit to Woodstock

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says a carbon tax will hurt those living in rural areas more than others.

He made the comment on Thursday during a round table discussion with agriculture and agri-food leaders at Veldale Farms in Woodstock.

Ford says the tax, beggining on April 1st, “does absolutely nothing for the environment, all it does is hurt families” by increasing the cost of things like groceries and transportation, he says Ontario is prepared to take Ottawa to court over the tax.

He says the carbon tax will make it more difficult for farmers to compete with those from other areas.

“If we were a stand-alone country we’d be the third largest trading partner in the world with the United States, Ontario alone, but how can we compete when we have one arm tied behind our back, when Ohio and Pennsylvania and other jurisdictions in the U.S. that are competing against us don’t have the burden of this carbon tax.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the tax will cut down on carbon-intensive consumption, reduce emissions and help curb pollution.
