Ottawa urged to help end CN strike

The President of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture is calling on Ottawa to help end the strike at CN Rail.

Keith Currie says when rail workers went on strike on Tuesday they put the Canadian agriculture sector in jeopardy.

Currie says that “Canadian farmers are in the middle of one of the toughest harvest seasons and with early winter weather already hitting much of the country, farmers are now contending with issues related to the availability of propane for grain farms and livestock and poultry operations.

He says Ottawa needs to step in and help put an end to the strike.

“Binding arbitration or a mediator to come in and help resolve this would certainly be some great first steps if that’s where they were willing to go, other than that if it looks like it’s going to be a long strike, then certainly back-to-work legislation may be something that we have to push for.”

Currie adds that OFA members who are affected by the rail strike are encouraged to reach out to their local MP to voice their concern and encourage a fast, effective resolution to the situation.
