Local farmers meeting with Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs over proposed security bill

Local farmers are being asked for their feedback from the provincial government.

Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece are meeting with the farmers in Stratford on Friday afternoon to discuss Bill 156 which concerns the Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act.

The Ford Government says the proposed bill strengthens protections for farmers by putting several measures into place including allowing the courts to order restitution in cases where a farmer has suffered damages to their livestock or from theft.

It would also increase the fines for trespassing on farmland.

The bill was introduced by Minister Hardeman in the Ontario Legislature on December 2nd last year and it began Second Reading on December 10th.

The meeting is taking place at the Stratford Rotary Complex.
