Province defers student loan payments; announces agreement for digital support for post-secondary schools

The province of Ontario is investing in digital supports for post-secondary students and deferring student loan payments.

Loan repayments for post-secondary education will be deferred at no interest until September 30, 2020.  If people with loans can still afford to make their payments the money will go to the loan principal and not interest.

“During this unprecedented period, it is important to help students and current borrowers, so students can continue with their studies and borrowers do not have to worry about making loan payments,” said Premier Doug Ford.

Post-secondary students will also have the chance to finish the school year.  The province has reached an agreement with eCampusOntario to allow digital learning opportunities to post-secondary institutions.  It will allow schools to finish year-end assessments.

The province has announced an additional $25-million to publicly funded colleges, universities and Indigenous Institutes for deep cleaning, medical supplies and offering mental health supports.
