Klassen: Current evidence doesn’t show masks should be mandatory in Huron Perth

The Medical Officer of Health for Huron Perth says current evidence doesn’t lead her to believe that masks should be mandatory in our area.

Dr.Miriam Klassen made the comment during a teleconference on Thursday afternoon saying she works according to scientific principles and takes an evidence-based approach.

She says good evidence comes from repeated observations and currently what she has seen doesn’t reach the threshold for her to order masks to be mandatory in Huron Perth.

However, she says if you’re going to an area where physical distancing isn’t possible then it’s a good idea to wear a mask to stay safe.

She says the evidence could change though as we have never experienced a global pandemic of this nature and knowledge continues to grow and evolve.

As for family members who want to visit long-term care facilities and seniors homes, she says they should work with the facility and call ahead to see if they are open to visitors.

She adds its also important to find out what guidelines they have in place and to follow them.
