Citizen’s group speaking out against proposed glass plant

A citizen’s group is speaking out against a proposal to bring a one-million-square-foot Chinese-owned float glass plant to Stratford.

Get Concerned Stratford says they are also questioning what they call Stratford City Council’s lack of transparency and public consultation throughout the process involving the Xinyi Canada Glass Limited proposed plant.

They will be holding a public rally at noon Monday outside Stratford City Hall just before city council discusses the proposed cost sharing agreement with the company at a virtual meeting.

Due to the pandemic and the Perth District Health Unit’s advisory on public gatherings, Monday’s protest will be limited to 100 people, all of whom will be required to remain socially distant and wear masks.

Council held a special meeting last Monday where many residents raised questions about the proposed plant and council members then voted the next day to defer the decision until more information is collected.

They are expected to present the answers to many of the questions at their virtual meeting Monday afternoon but no vote on the proposal will take place.
