Stratford City Council puts brakes on proposed tourism tax

Stratford City Council has put the brakes on a proposed tourism tax.

Council voted at their virtual regular meeting Monday night to defer a review by an ad-hoc committee on a proposed four per cent accommodation tax.

City staff reported there were significant setbacks in the review of the proposed tax due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the same time, council also voted to defer an organizational review of tourism agency Destination Stratford due to the changes that they have already been put in place.

It was also recommended by staff at the meeting that the city work with Destination Stratford to search for a third-party consulting firm that will develop a new five-year tourism strategy and action plan for the city.

The cost of the review could be part of the city’s 2021 budget.
