Stratford firefighters taking part in ice rescue training

Stratford firefighters are taking to the Avon River for ice rescue training this week.

They say the hands-on exercises involve different simulated scenarios where one or two people have fallen through the ice, and can’t climb out on their own.

The firefighters use specialized gear, including rescue suits, ropes, throw bags, and an inflatable Rapid Deployment Craft to help pull the victims from the icy water.

As temperatures begin to climb, they are reminding everyone to be cautious around bodies of water, and to stay off the ice.
