Ontario investing $25.5 million in technology to protect agri-food workers

The Ontario government says it’s investing $25.5 million in technology to protect agri-food workers.

Officials launched a modernized cost-share intake program Wednesday, included as part of the Ontario budget, that they say will lead to more technological innovations which will better protect the health and safety of workers and improve efficiency in the industry.

They say applications for some of the $22 million program could include things like sorting systems or automated pruning robots.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman says his government is stepping up to help farmers deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They don’t spare any effort to ensure this will be an excellent season with positive outcomes for them, their workers and their operations, that’s why our government wants to continue to support them in any way that we can.”

The first intake of the programs will run from May 17th to June 21st, 2021.
