Frederick Cecil Ashton, age 76 passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with his family by his side on October 6, 2014. Fred was born in Stratford, September 21, 1938, son of the late Cecil Ashton and the former Bessie Cole. Fred’s family owned and operated a restaurant in New Hamburg and later Ashton’s Diner in Shakespeare from 1955 until 1963. Fred married M. Jane Hyde at Shakespeare Presbyterian Church June 4, 1960. At that time Fred was working with the  Kist Beverage Company. He later began his 38 year career as a car salesman working for Steffler Chev in New Hamburg, Perth Motors in Stratford and later with Kalbfleisch Brothers in Stratford until his retirement in 2000. Fred enjoyed his Olds Cutlass 442 Convertible,  golfing, playing cards, snowmobiling, boating and his retirement at Pine Lake in Bayfield.  Beloved husband for 54 years of Jane. Loving father of Rob (Jackie), Lori Gansevles, Linda Young (Greg). Loving grampee of Wyatt and Kally Ashton, Emma, Meghan and Ryan Gansevles, Ava Young and soon to be born Ashton Young.  Also survived by sisters-in-law Marg Ashton, Mary Atchison, Lynn Hyde and Judy Nafziger (Bill) and their families. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his only sibling Wiliiam John Ashton (1996) and by a brother-in-law Doug Atchison (2012). Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Thursday, October 9 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 11th at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, North Easthope Township.
