Spring fire hydrant flushing underway in Stratford

Spring fire hydrant flushing will be happening over the next five weeks in Stratford.

The city does this twice a year, usually in the spring and fall, to get rid of iron that may have settled in the water mains.  It is also a way to do preventative maintenance on the hydrants.

But it means your water may be discoloured as crews do the flushing. Water quality won’t be affected so it is still safe to drink.

The city warns you should make sure your water has cleared up before you do laundry, particularly whites, so you don’t wreck your clothes as the discoloured water could cause stains.

To clear the water turn a tap on as close as possible to where the water service enters your house and run the cold water for 15 minutes.  If it isn’t running clear by then turn it off and try again in a half-hour.
