New housing development planned for Mitchell

One of the people behind a planned housing development in Mitchell says it will help young families.

Michael Van Pelt and his brother Aron Van Pelt are behind the development of stage two of Upper Thames Village which would consist of eleven lots along Nelson Street with single-family dwellings.

A public meeting was held on the development by Perth County Council Thursday morning where the plans for the project were laid out.

Van Pelt says municipalities like West Perth can help developers address the housing issue by giving them options.

“They set the vision for what they want in their community, they set the vision for the kind of diverse housing options, and then let developers and let the entrepreneurial world go to work.”

Van Pelt adds he expects the project to receive final approval by the end of next month with construction starting in the summer.
