Insurance costs dropping for bed and breakfast owners in Stratford

Bed and breakfast owners in Stratford are seeing their insurance costs drop.

At a special meeting Monday night, Stratford City Council voted to amend a by-law to require bed and breakfast owners to have $2 million general liability insurance in place.

That’s down from the $5 million that was initially required last year with the change made partly, according to staff, because of the difficulties accommodation providers have in obtaining that level of coverage.

Staff and the city’s insurer revisited the minimum amount required that would ensure the city and the accommodation providers safeguard themselves against risk, while also alleviating the difficulties experienced by some accommodation providers in attaining necessary insurance.

Eventually, it was decided that $2 million would be enough for bed and breakfasts that don’t involve city property.
