Friendship Centre Hosts Virtual International Women’s Day

The Friendship Centre is hosting an online speakers’ event on Friday, March 5 at 10:00 a.m. in conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD). This year’s theme, #ChooseToChallenge, encourages all people to call out gender bias and inequity. It emphasizes that a challenged world is an alert world and that collectively, we can help create more inclusive societies.

The Friendship Centre’s two guest speakers will address how they challenge existing systems and beliefs, and strive for equality, in their work and lives.

Melissa Currie, a welder by trade, as well as a Union Representative, will describe her experiences pursuing a non-traditional career path for women. Currie proudly states, “I choose to challenge yesterday, today and tomorrow, for my fellow sisters and for our daughters yet to come.”

Rochella Watson, Senior Associate of Community Engagement and Seniors Initiatives, Assaulted Women’s Helpline (AWHL) will speak about emotional support, safety planning, information and referral for anyone who calls the line, including older women.
