Pickleball Open House

August 15

The Pyramid Recreation Centre and St. Marys Pickleball Association (SMPA) are teaming up to introduce Pickelball to a whole new audience. On Thursday, August 15 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., they will host a “Pickleball Open House” for ages fourteen and up on the Rock Rink. The dry pad will be set-up with all the equipment needed to learn about the game. Attendees simply need to wear comfortable clothes and non-slip running shoes. Drop-ins are welcome, though pre-registration is preferred as a waiver/parental consent form is required. The event is free.

Pickleball, which is a combination of ping-pong, tennis and badminton, has gained popularity among local baby boomers in recent years due to being relatively low impact and easy to set-up indoors. Recreation staff and thePickleball Association are hoping to expand that interest to include racquet sport enthusiasts of all ages.

Pickleball is already very popular at the Friendship Centre,” Hillary Bennett, Senior Services Program Coordinator, says. “We feel it has the potential for even wider appeal among teenagers and adults of all ages – It’s easy for novices to pick up but also challenging enough to appeal to experienced tennis and badminton players.”

Steve Lawton, SMPA Director of Communication also adds: “The St. Marys Pickleball Association’s mission is to provide a safe, fun, healthy, recreational and competitive activity for its members. We promote growth, exercise, and development of skills and enjoyment of Pickleball in and around the area of St. Marys. We welcome people to utilize the outdoor pickleball courts on Water St. Please contact Doug Diplock SMPA President atstmaryspickleball@gmail.com to find out other details regarding the SMPA.”
