Huron Perth Public Health is reporting a bat in Stratford has tested positive for rabies.
It’s the first bat to test positive in the counties this year.
A person was bitten by the bat and is receiving rabies post-exposure treatment, to prevent development of a rabies infection.
Rabies is a viral disease that is fatal to humans. Huron Perth Public Health reminds everyone to avoid exposure to bats and to contact the health unit if exposed.
Public health inspector Patrick Landry said anyone who is bitten or scratched by a bat should wash the area immediately and seek medical help.
Pets, including cats and dogs, need to be vaccinated for rabies, per Ontario law.
