Stratford residents are finding new connections by building bonds on benches.

Diane Berkers has sparked a community movement in Stratford with her ‘Park Bench Friendships’ initiative, bringing locals together through weekly meetups on the north shore.

Berkers, motivated by a desire to combat loneliness, began hosting these gatherings in May.

Participants only need to bring a chair, a joke, and a drink. Since its inception, the initiative has quickly become a favorite.

The gatherings started small and now attract a diverse group of people of all ages and backgrounds.

“When you laugh, it’s the easiest way to connect with somebody,” she said.

The goal is to create a welcoming space where everyone feels accepted.

Berkers hopes her idea will inspire similar groups worldwide, helping to provide companionship in an increasingly isolated world.

She encourages everyone to join.

“So be brave, wear a name tag, listen in, but keep coming back,” Berkers concluded.

Park Bench Friendships in Stratford demonstrates how simple actions can foster meaningful relationships and strengthen community bonds, Berkers said.

The next Park Bench gathering is on Monday, July 8 from 10 a.m. until noon.
