A group of mostly part time LCBO employees were receiving a wave of support while picketing near Stratford Mall on Tuesday.
One LCBO worker, preferring not to provide a name, told MyStratfordNow that drivers are honking their horns in support while others are dropping off water and snacks.
The group was stationed near Ontario Street, not directly in front of the LCBO location at the mall. Striking workers from the city’s downtown location are also on hand showing support, the employee said, along with visiting employees from Tavistock, Mitchell and Cambridge.
It’s the first LCBO strike in the province and all locations are closed. The union for the liquor store workers says no talks are planned as the strike entered its fifth day.
The Stratford employee said striking workers – numbering up to 35 in Stratford but more during the holiday season – are taking the time to explain the situation to residents.
Workers want more full-time jobs: up to 70 per cent are part-time. Better guarantees on work hours and better benefits are also concerns.
The LCBO contributes billions to provincial coffers but that could be in jeopardy and heading to already rich corporations if the province continues expansion plans, the LCBO worker said.
