Everyone deserves to start the day with a good breakfast.
Stratford Black Swans Rugby Club thought as much when they started a cereal box challenge.
After collecting 151 boxes of cereal for Stratford House of Blessing, the rugby club put out a challenge to Stratford Youth Soccer, who collected 323 cereal boxes.
Youth soccer has passed the challenge on to Stratford Police Service and Stratford Fire Department. St. Marys FD are also jumping on board.
Darren Fischer, Community Resource and Media Relations Officer with Stratford Police Service, says friendly competition can combat hunger.
“I just know that the community usually comes together with these types of donations and I know our food banks are getting a little bit low this time of year.”
The Salvation Army will also receive cereal boxes.
The challenge starts Thursday and runs for a week.
Fischer says the competition will be held internally at police and fire departments, but the public can also drop off cereal boxes at police HQ in Stratford and at the Erie Street fire hall, during office hours.
Fischer says people don’t always think of food banks throughout the summer.
“I think this is a great initiative and really want to thank the membership of the Stratford Black Swans for putting this initiative together.”
