Booze hits corner stores in Stratford and area

The province-wide rollout of booze in corner stores starts Thursday, with a number of Stratford and area businesses now licensed to do so.

There are 11 spots in the city where you can now buy alcohol, including stand-alone variety stores and gas bars.

That’s according to an inventory of locations listed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, which regulates alcohol sales in the province.

Not all of the locations were expected to be ready to sell booze today, the provincial government noted, but it’s the first day they can legally do so.

Local locations listed include city mainstays Joe’s Variety, Mornington Variety and East End Variety.

Mobil gas bars on Ontario Street and Erie Street and the Canadian Tire gas bar are also listed by the commission.

In St. Marys, there were two variety stores and the town’s Esso station on Queen Street East on the list.

Listowel and Mitchell also have variety store and gas stations selling booze.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission approved more than 4,100 licenses to sell beer, wine and ready-to-drink cocktails. Alcohol can be sold from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., according to the commission.

The provincial government says it will provide more choice and options for consumers.
