Council votes to move ahead with LTC on Vivian Line

After a thorough discussion and some passionate delegations from city residents, Stratford City Council voted to move ahead with development of a long-term care facility.

Monday night’s meeting at city hall included comments about green spaces for future residents at the LTC facility on Vivian Line, in the city’s north end.

There was also concerns about parking, bicycle spaces, noise and car lights.

Council ultimately voted 7-2 in favour of moving forward with the development, which will include up to 288 beds to help offset a big need for LTC homes in the region.

Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma said there was opportunity to ask questions and get answers on the spot, from city staff and representatives from developer Stratford Long Term Care LP (peopleCare) and GSP Group, a planning, urban design and architecture company.

“We got lots done and in a respectful, democratic fashion.”

Next steps include the applicant working with city staff and the province to finalize details.

But a big hurdle has been cleared.

“Council and the city are moving forward with this project,” said Ritsma.

Conversations about the site plan will also continue, the mayor said, noting he is confident remaining overall concerns will be addressed.
