TGIF: Enjoy a coffee with firefighters on Friday

Who doesn’t love a good cup of java and some great company?

The Perth East Fire Department in partnership with Community Outreach Services from Knollcrest Lodge are hosting Coffee with a Firefighter Friday in Milverton.

It takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Tim Hortons on Main Street.

People are encouraged to come out and learn about fire safety as well as have a cup of coffee with the community’s firefighters.

Jess Jorritsma, administrative assistant and public educator for the Perth East Fire Department with the Perth East and West Perth Fire Departments explained the importance of the event in educating the public about fire safety.

“It’s also a good chance for the people in the community to get to know us and the firefighters,” expressed Jorritsma.

Jorritsma stated that fire safety is sometimes on the back burner for people yet it’s the first line of defence against a fire emergency.

She also expressed sadness over the rise in fatalities related to fires in Ontario, currently at an all time high in the province.

Jorritsma encouraged people to come out to the event tomorrow to learn more about lifesaving strategies.

“I hope people really just ask good questions, take home you know maybe one or two tips of testing the smoke alarms, having some sort of plan in place,” explained Jorritsma.

Be sure to test your alarms monthly while checking that they’re in date as well as having a fire escape plan for your home.
