Town of St. Marys set to unveil Sports Wall of Fame, inaugural inductees

St. Marys has a new Sports Wall of Fame and the town is hosting a grand unveiling to celebrate the inaugural group of inductees.

The Sports Wall of Fame is located inside the Pyramid Recreation Centre, the venue for the Oct. 19 celebration, which will see six athletes with local ties inducted.

The ceremony starts at 2 p.m.

Athlete inductees include Stanley Cup winner Riley Hern, former NHL’er Mark Bell and Team Canada softball player Dale Levy.

Builders include athlete, coach and manager Ferris Stewart and Pat Payton, a longtime local journalist. St. Marys Creamery Juniors, the 1988 Canadian junior men’s fastball champions, are the team entry.

Joannah Campbell, Recreation Manager for the Town of St. Marys, said it’s important to recognize the dedicated individuals, teams and builders who play a role the success and development of sports in St. Marys.

“There has been a lot of discussion amongst residents of the town and people just eager to see this very well deserved recognition for some local athletes and supporters of sport in St. Marys,” Campbell told MyStratfordNow.

The Sports Wall of Fame was proposed by the town’s recreation and leisure advisory committee. Inductees were announced in May.

The next call for Sports Wall of Fame nominations will start next April.
