St. Marys Community Players are celebrating 50 years.
Marie Stevens, co-producer and St.Marys Community Players board member, said the non-profit community theatre company began in 1974 with a group of ambitious volunteers.
Theatre in the town, however, started long before that.
Stevens explained that they are always looking to build the organizations volunteer base with avid theatre-lovers who want to get involved.
Additionally, they are welcoming to new members who wish to join the company, with two levels of membership being offered (voting/non-voting).
Overall, Stevens believes the anniversary is a worthy cause for celebration.
“50 years of an organization and people providing arts and culture to the community and working together i think is something that needs to be celebrated,” said Stevens.
MyStratfordNow.com also spoke with Gord Hardcastle, director of the season’s first show, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, to learn more about the production.
The “riotous musical comedy”, as Hardcastle calls it, offers good theatre at a reasonable price to see people you may know from your community perform.
“So it involves the community, it gives back to the community, so I don’t think they need to support us, they just need to come and enjoy it,” expressed Hardcastle.
The musical runs from Oct. 17 to Nov. 3, with many other productions slated for the upcoming 50th anniversary season.
