Police versus Fire on the ice this Sunday

It’s a friendly game of hockey between fire and police services.

This Sunday, Perth County OPP will duke it out with Perth County Fire Services for another Battle of the Badges – an annual fundraiser supporting Victim Services Huron Perth.

Starting at 1 p.m. at the Steve Kerr Memorial Complex in Listowel, police officers and firefighters will take to the ice for a good cause.

Prior to the game, the public can enjoy a free skate from noon to 1 p.m.

Admission to the battle is by cash donation or non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army Food Bank.

MyStratfordNow sat down with Sergeants Barry Cookson and Scott Lobb to learn more about the upcoming event. Fire took home the coveted trophy last year after a nail-biting 4-3 result.

But who is going to take home the win this year?

“Police obviously!” laughed Sgt. Cookson.

Sgt. Cookson explained that supporting Victim Services is important and the work they provide is vital to the community.

“We work hand-in-hand with a lot of emergency situations or crisis situations where we call on them and they are there to support victims of crime,” said Sgt. Cookson.

Deborah Logue, Executive Director for Victim Services Huron Perth, explained the event is some good ol’ fashioned entertainment.

“It’s that real partnership between all the first responders going out and having a good time and putting on a bit of a show,” said Logue.

Logue also explained that government funding for Victim Services is limited, so any funds raised help enhance services provided.

There is a silent auction and chuck-a-puck as well as information booths set up from OPP, Perth County Auto Theft Prevention Team and Victim Services Huron Perth.
