How to keep ‘porch pirates’ away this holiday season

OPP is encouraging the public to remain diligent this holiday season in order to protect packages from ‘porch pirates’.

Package thieves, also known as ‘porch pirates’, steal parcels from doorsteps and with the festive season almost here, parcels and packages are being delivered to front porches more frequently.

Police are sharing some tactics to defend your porch against these pirates.

Tips include requesting a signature upon delivery to ensure the package gets into the right hands.

You can also ship the package to a neighbour or relative who will be home or have the package delivered to your work.

Track deliveries online so you can be at home when they’re expected to arrive, or choose in-store or curbside pickup.

You can also install home security cameras to deter thieves or request the delivery driver to leave the package out of sight, possibly by a rear or side door.

If you do have a package stolen, report the incident to local police and the shipping company.
