Festive Ride campaign up and running in Stratford/Perth County

Stratford Police Service and Perth OPP are starting their Festive RIDE campaigns in the city and county on Thursday (Nov. 21).

The annual campaign, held throughout the province, serves as a chance to educate the public around the dangers of impaired driving.

Residents can expect an increased police presence on the roadways with more RIDE programs in Stratford and Perth County.

Stratford Police Const. Darren Fischer said the campaign is a good chance to remind the public about road safety during the holiday season.

“The purpose of doing these is to create awareness on impaired driving on our roadways, and to create a safer and more sober driving atmosphere for everybody out there.”

Fischer said its important during this time of year, but also year-round, to follow tips and best practices that include planning ahead and making sure you have a ride at the end of the night, take a cab or have a designated driver.

Insp. Wendy Burrow, Detachment Commander with Perth County OPP, said impaired driving is still one of the leading causes of fatalities on Perth County roadways and drivers can make a difference by planning ahead and ensuring they have a sober driver.

Fischer said the campaign will take some impaired drivers off the roadways, but it’s also a time to remind the public about making good choices.

“They certainly are good educational tools and good ways to keep people aware that the police are out there looking for impaired drivers.”

The Festive RIDE campaign runs until New Year’s Day.
