City apologizes for pulling preauthorized tax payments early

Some residents of Stratford got a big surprise when scheduled tax payments were processed several days early.

The city apologized for the error in a media release, noting they were supposed to come out on the first of the month, Dec. 1.

Some residents have noted their monthly property tax payments were withdrawn without their consent, sending them into overdraft, or facing a fee.

The city noted that it is investigating and will work with property owners but they are asking for patience while doing so.

Anyone experiencing a returned property tax payment through their financial institution can call 519-271-0250 ext. 5212 to make alternate arrangements.

The city said there will not be another withdrawal on Dec. 1, and your property tax account will not be charged interest or fees through Dec. 31.

Affected property owners may also be able to contact their financial institutions to reverse the transaction in the short term, or to discuss alternatives, the city said.
