Fighting Irish GM/coach resigns, charged with assault after OSHL hockey game

The Ontario Super Hockey League says it has accepted the resignation of Jamie Petrie, the head coach and general manager of the Stratford Fighting Irish.

Wellington OPP told MyStratfordNow that Petrie, age 54, was charged with assault after they responded to the incident at 11 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 13) at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.

Elora Rocks hosted the Fighting Irish.

A statement on the Rocks’ Facebook page said the incident happened after the hockey game, which Elora won, and that the person impacted was okay.

OPP said Petrie was arrested at the scene and has since been released from police custody.

He has a bail hearing scheduled for Jan. 17 in Guelph.

The club said it does not condone violence in any form and deeply regrets that members of the community had to witness it.

League Director Bill Ryan said the OSHL is committed to providing a safe environment for all of its players, staff, and fans.

Wellington OPP ask anyone with information to contact them, or Crime Stoppers.

Petrie and Ryan founded the league during the pandemic.
