Conservation authority urges caution after melting snow, rain

Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) urges residents to be cautious around waterways after some consistent rain and melting snow.

The UTRCA has warned residents to stay away from flood control reservoirs.

Warmer temperatures and rain continues to melt remaining snow, leading to increased runoff and higher flows in ditches, streams, and rivers.

River banks and creeks are slippery and, when combined with fast-moving cold water, pose a hazard. Children and pets should be kept away from the water and frozen ponds.

Warm temperatures above freezing are forecast until the middle of the week.

UTRCA expects streams and rivers to remain elevated this week, with peak flows on Monday, however, it does not expect any significant widespread flooding.

The conservation authority is operating its flood control reservoirs at Wildwood, Fanshawe, and Pittock Conservation Areas to reduce downstream flooding.
