Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma says it was a year of successes and some tragedy.
Ritsma is proud of the “strong economic base in Stratford”, with a manufacturing sector that drives 65 per cent of the city’s economy.
Small businesses contribute 17 per cent to that economy, helping the city “continue to thrive”.
Ritsma is grateful for the Stratford Festival, Lights on Stratford, the Stratford Film Festival and more for engaging with tourists and residents.
“All the other…opportunities for not only tourists that come but also residents to enjoy Stratford.”
Ritsma noted that the community has overcome significant tragedies this past year, and have “come together” following these losses.
That includes two homicide investigations less than 10 weeks apart.
The mayor is advocating for an increase in funding from upper tier governments in regards to health and safety, adding the homelessness crisis is affecting the city and community.
“When we talk homelessness and supporting people that are marginalized, it is every sector.”
Ritsma will continue conversations around the “big topic” of homelessness.
2025 is set to be another busy year for the city.
Budget talks continue in the new year, as the operational budget “needs to be looked at.”
“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, but a lot of work that we can be proud of that we completed.”
Ritsma noted the longevity of community organizations, from sports and service clubs, to the local arena and radio station celebrating 100 years.
He says the community should be proud of the work they continue to do.
