Find a connection to yourself and others through a drum circle

You can discover a host of holistic benefits through a community drum circle, including feeling more connected with yourself and others.

Dee Leifso, organizer of Dee’s Drum Circle, said drumming can foster mindfulness, healing, relaxation, lower blood pressure, inner peace, reduced stress as well as energizing the soul and promoting a sense of joy.

Leifso is preparing for an upcoming drum circle on Jan. 22 at Factory 163 in Stratford.

“At this time of uncertainty in the world, we need an outlet to release our stress, balance and protect our energies, and to support our overall health, and that’s what drumming is all about.”

There is also the social connection due to being in an intimate, low lit setting with 40 other drummers, with the goal of “drumming from the soul”.

Leifso has taken part in drum circles for 15 years, after her Indigenous friend taught her the benefits of the activity and how to make hand drums.

And people who attend the event often feel the benefits immediately.

“I mean people when they leave, they tell me how much different they feel, it’s so spiritually triggered and you really feel connected with everybody, including yourself,” said Leifso.

Other drum circles are scheduled for Feb. 19 and March 19.

Local musician Barry Payne is facilitating the drum circles.

The event is BYOD (Bring Your Own Drum). If you don’t have a drum, you can rent one when you register. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary.

Cost is $20 for the 90 minute session.

To register, go to Dee’s Drum Circle website.
