United Way Perth-Huron fundraising hits the ‘north side’ of 50 per cent

United Way Perth-Huron’s annual fundraising campaign is moving along, with a big annual event on tap for next month.

Liz Cooper, manager of community development, said $1.4 million has been raised, or about 55 per cent of the goal.

“We are on the north side of 50 per cent and that is good at this time of year for United Way Perth-Huron.”

Cooper said the postal strike slowed things down a little, however, people can continue to donate online or drop in to the office on Erie Street in Stratford.

There are a couple of events coming up that will help the cause.

Volunteers will be at the Stratford Warriors junior B game next Friday (Jan. 17), to pass the fundraising bucket through the audience during the first period.

Campaign co-chairs John Wolfe and Kristin Sainsbury will drop the ceremonial puck.

Organizers are also getting set for Coldest Night of the Year on Feb. 22.

More than $200,000 was raised last year.

The Coldest Night of the Year benefits Shelterlink Youth Services, the county’s only youth shelter, and Stratford Connection Centre, a drop-in facility supporting area homeless and vulnerable residents.

Michelle Cutts said the organization served 312 youth in 2024.

Cutts explained that is also helps with expanded outreach services.

“Reaching youth who are risk of being homeless, and preventing them from ever having to go to a shelter.”

The annual walk around the Avon River has 37 teams signed up so far.

Cooper said Stratford is in second place so far in all of Canada for the number of walkers entered.

“It’s a great community event and we can’t wait for more people to sign up.”

This year the walk will start on Lakeside Drive at the parking lot across from the Festival Theatre.

Anyone can start their own team at the Coldest Night of the Year website.
