OPP offer tips as extreme cold hits Stratford and southern Ontario

A polar vortex has descended upon southern Ontario, sending the region into a deep freeze.

OPP are warning drivers to be prepare for intense cold and potential for heavy snowfall.

“Situations like being stuck in the ditch or stranded in a significant traffic backup due to a collision can become downright dangerous when the mercury plunges,” OPP said.

Police are offering up several tips including dressing for winter even though you’ll be in your car, making sure your cell phone is charged and ensuring your fuel tank is full before hitting the road.

“If you encounter a lengthy traffic delay, you’ll need your vehicle’s heater to stay warm,” added the release.

Temperatures in Stratford are expected to drop to minus 29 overnight, with a wind chill at minus 28 on Tuesday afternoon.

Police also advise to carry a winter driving survival kit including a shovel, blanket, warm clothes, food, water, booster cables, flashlight, high-energy foods, matches and a candle.

Road conditions should also be monitored before heading out on the roads. The Ministry of Transportation’s website provides up-to-date road conditions at www.511on.ca as does Municipal 511 at https://www.municipal511.ca/.
